Food for Thought! A daily dose of history, Where did it...?
The tomato can be traced back to the Aztecs around 700 AD. Europeans seem to have been introduced to the tomato when early explorers brought it back with them. The tomato was accepted in southern Europe but the farther north it moved the more people resisted it. Immigration from Europe to America seems to have been the driving force for the tomatoes acceptance as cultures and tastes blended. The tomato also was not regarded as a kitchen vegetable until preceding the Civil War. Who knew? We use approximately 12 million tons of tomatoes a year. Wow. Have to go now, I’m hungry.
