I gave good faith ck to hold vacant apt I'm paid up here till 1st should rent start on new apt on 1st?

Whats the policy on holding apts, gave new landlord Ck to hold apt, am pd to the 1st here,would like to pay Nov rent at new apt on1st. He kinda hedged that the 15th was more to his liking, I kinda think that it would have been vacant to the 1st anyway should I be penalized this way for trying to hold it.
