Why was the U Boat Campaign during WWI important?

So Im doing this report but I'm almost done with it. I know that it was something about Germany and how their U Boats had a blockade around England but I want to know why was it important? How did this event have any relation to the U.S.? Basically just need its importance and anything that has to do with the U.S.. Please and thank you :).
